newest installment of Avengers has Parker Robbins up to his third Infinity Gem. This story arc is great for so many reasons. The Hood was left powerless after Siege and I was wondering where Marvel would go with him. I am please that he has been given such a great role, and back near the top of the list of Marvel villains. The first issue that laid out this quest for the Infinity Gems started out slow, and even had you wondering who exactly was going after them. After some solid issues, you are in the middle of a great race between the Avengers and the Hood to see who can claim the Gems first from their Illuminati hiding spots. The underlying story of the Avengers discovering the existence of the Illuminati and how betrayed they feel is also great. It adds another layer to the Steve Rogers/Tony Stark battle that rages on, leading to Iron Man being dismissed from the Avengers. I am captivated by where they will go with this story. Will The Hood claim all six gems? Will the Avengers stop him short of his goal? Will the Illuminati be torn apart after their reveal?

This my friends, is good comic storytelling.

The Original Nerd Crack

I am going to assume that unless you lived the last 15 years under a rock, that you know what the World of Warcraft is. The most successful Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) of all time, and still the most subscribed game with millions of players worldwide, WoW has survived over six years of success.

Why is this important you ask?

The game that owned online junkies souls before WoW, was EverQuest. EverCrack, as it was known by its loyal following, set the standard and was the first true MMO phenom to grab so many peoples attentions. People were so addicted to this game that the American Social Services program actually started a branch dedicated to online addicts who had lost jobs, and even worse. This game had an amazing run as pretty much the only thing of its kind, releasing expansions on a regular basis. This was the first game that I knew of that charged $15/month to play, plus you add this to regular releases of paid expansions and you have a money making machine.

In 2004, EverQuest II, World of Warcraft and City of Heroes all hit the market. The second generation of the MMO was in full swing and mom's basement became a permanent residence. The original EQ slowly started to dry up and fade away. It has maintained enough of a loyal following that the company still releases expansions and increases the maximum level cap.

In the new year, over ten years after the initial launch of EQ, the game has offered a server that is the original bare bones version of the game. Amazingly many people, including myself, have returned to wander around and relive the game that stole their lives so many years ago. I'm actually amazed, and yet horrified, that I still know my way around this fictional world. The server itself is full 24/7, which I think shows just how many middle aged nerds crave a walk down memory lane.

The 12 Days of Epicness

Anyone who knows me is well aware of my new found love of all things Scott Pilgrim. Bruce Wayne is back from his "death" and time travelling exploits, and this is suppose to be a "good jump on point" as my comic friend put it. The new direction is called Batman Inc. and I will read it with an open mind, putting aside my rage for Dan Didio and Grant Morrison. The worst thing that can happen is that DC gets $5 out of me, potentially what could be the last $5 they ever see.

More Hooked on Phonics Fun.

I know that this will be a pretty obscure reference for anyone who missed the original George Bush Sr. years in the White House. You'd think that an epic nerd of my rank would want a dress up day each month.

After going shopping with my son, who is three, for a halloween costume I found myself a little more into the costume thing. He is in love with his Eeyore costume and wears it all the time, it may not make it to the 31st. I put some thought into what I would like to do, that doesn't require a seamstress or a Tony Stark sized bank account. What I came up with was Madrox, no suprise here. Luck would have it that some dude on Ebay was selling the T-Shirt for $7 each. He apparently had to do a bulk order when he tried to get some printed up and is selling the extras. For the first time in recent memory I am feeling the Halloween spirit, and actually have the day off for once too. Family trick or treat will be done for the first time and I am very excited to see how my son will react to free candy, at every house. Save for some face paint, people will probably think that I'm just being myself, oh well.

So here is a cheer to my son, who allows me to see the world through the eyes of a child. Older eyes sometimes miss the silver lining in things.

The Three R's, or the Closest Thing

Here is a quick little dandy I found at work a while back, enjoy!

Yes, I have been a bad, bad blogger. I hold anger inside over so many things, big and small, that it turns me into a seething cesspool of rage. I feel that I am starting to take some of this bitterness out on friends and family around me. That can get ugly fast, so I am going to take better time to reassess these things and put them into two categories :

1. Deal With It or Get Over It
If something that is bothering me is beyond my control, then I need to deal and move on. Harping on something and continually digging it back up will just further frustrate me. I will do my best to overcome large obstacles, and then move on knowing that I did indeed do my best and move forward.

2. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
Little things that happen over the coarse of a lifetime need to be kept in perspective and not allowed to boil out of control. I have a bad habit of letting a pile of little things build up around me and smother me. Being more aggressive about dealing with these things as they happen will thwart any chance of a meltdown in the future. If any of these little problems resurface frequently, then they may need to get moved to #1 and have more effort put into them.

I need to spend some time each day counting the blessings I have around me. I have a good job, great friends and an amazing family. There are people in the world in much worse situations than my own and it really is petty of me to gripe over little things. When something like Haiti comes along, it serves purpose to keep reality in check.

I don't think that I will ever become that really annoying happy guy that people hate at their jobs (with 15 pieces of flair), but I do vow to never be a source of negative energy for others.

Goodbye Facebook, Hello Mii

So I came to the realization the other day that there is no excuse for me to sneak in a twenty to thirty minute workout four days a week. Granted yesterday I had to do it around a dancing toddler who was trying to mimic my exercises, but yes it is doable.

A while back I had posted that I bought a Wii program called EA Active. Until recently I have not really bothered with it, or the thought of working out at all really. Well the winter blues have caught up to me, combined with working with skinny ass university students all the time. I have started an option in Active that is called the 30 Day Challenge. I will admit that I have had to restart it twice now because of not being totally into it, but this newest time it seems to have stuck. I really enjoy how it is fun, positive and still a great workout. I have been left exhausted from it a couple times now, pretty impressive for a "game." At the end of each days workout, you take a short survey of your previous days eating and drinking habits. I found this a nice passive way of keeping you thinking about what you are going to eat each day. It specifically asks how much pop and fast food you ate the day before, and for myself I started to feel guilty typing in that I had consumed those things. I'm already starting to feel a bit more energetic only after a couple weeks, now to see if my body shape moves in a better direction.

What does Facebook have to do with this you may ask? I found myself spending a few hours a day on it reading peoples status updates and playing apps. One of my greatest addictions is drinking WAY too much pop. I would cut myself off in the past, get wicked headaches and run right back for more. It's not good for my health, teeth or sanity. My body will probably rejoice at the fact that I will actually intake the proper amount of water in a day now.

Number 5 - Exercise Regularly
This is a tough one that I have also tried to get back into on a semi day to day basis. Now with the fantastic programs on the Nintendo Wii (EA Active rocks!) I can try to sneak in a twenty minute workout five times a week. Hopefully this combined with some better eating choices will provide me with more energy and a positive attitude once again.

Number 6 - It's Not Always Beer O'clock
Ending each shift with a pint or two to unwind, and then fall asleep is not a sound weight strategy. It is bad enough that I already work at a pizza/pasta joint and take in a ton of carbs after 9pm. At 35 I need to take a bit better care of my body, who else will?

The Return of the King of the Ring

Tonight I imagine will be one of the rare times now in life that I will get goosebumps. Bret Hart makes his long awaited return to the WWE tonight, after a twelve year hiatus. The 1997 Montreal screw job as it is now remembered by all wrestling fans, was the last time Bret was ever seen working for Vince McMahon. Most of his time after that in WCW was spent floundering in a company with no idea how to use him. Bret retired after a severe concussion suffered at the hands of Bill goldberg. In a sport where many people stay too long and become a joke, Bret was taken away far too soon. For a former finalist for Canadian Athlete of the Year, and probably one of the most well known Canadian celebrities ever, you should do yourself a favor and catch him one more time. I know I will.

Batman Returns, But Will the Readers?

Well it looks like due to the overwhelming drop in popularity, Bruce Wayne will work his way back sooner than expected. When I first read that they were "killing off" Bruce, the projected return was 2011. Now the powers at DC have realized that a universe without Superman or Batman isn't a popular one, and they are moving up Bruce Waynes return to early 2010. Wow. Below is his projected cave man look, because only Dan Didio knows that we need a crimefighter in caveman days. I will return soon with his pirate look (yes pirate Batman) as he battles his way through time.

An Open Letter To Dan Didio

Growing up one of my earliest memories was the way my room was decorated. The curtains, bedding and wallpaper were all DC heroes. Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel all looked down at me each day as I grew up. This was probably the subliminal beginnings of me being a life long fan of DC characters.

Being from a small town there was no access to a large selection of what to read, but with luck a convenience store in town carried Batman monthly. Not knowing how the publication cycle worked, I would go down every couple of weeks and look for the latest Batman issue. It wasn't until 1993 that I moved to a large city for university, complete with comic book stores. I immediately started a file, collecting anything that involved Batman or his cast of characters. During this time the writing was fantastic, from Knightfall through Legacy, Contagion and beyond. I discovered great writers like Peter David (Aquaman), Grant Morrison (JLA) and Chuck Dixon (Nightwing) to just mention the strongest memories.

I took a brief hiatus from comic collecting, only to find a girlfriend who enjoyed the culture as much as I do. Upon returning I asked what I missed that was worth going back and getting in trade form. The first words I heard were Brian Michael Bendis. Being a life long DC fan, I took it slow and picked up his Daredevil series. I also picked up a personal high amount of DC titles to dive right back in where I left off. Jeff Loeb amazed me with his Hush and Superman/Batman stories and it was nice to see Chuck Dixon return for the occasional story arc.

I found Nightwing floundering as a title and more importantly, as a character. Oliver Queen and Hal Jordan led a parade of formerly dead characters who were featured in titles again. Around the time of Loeb's departure I found solace in very few DC titles, and yet hung on to some for far too long out of sentimental reasons. I am not giving him all of the credit, his Marvel titles are not very good either but that seems to be around the time that things really got bad at DC. I cannot recall a well written DC story, save for Identity Crisis, off the top of my head for the last 5 years. A third straight weekly series with poor writing made me bitter that I had even started such an endeavor, and the "big three" were at an all time low for me. I dropped Action Comics, Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Teen Titans, Titans, Outsiders and many, many others due to poor writing and absolutely no continuity between titles.

The final straw for me was the horrible combination of Batman RIP, Final Crisis and Blackest Night. At some point during my hiatus, Mr. Morrison lost his touch as a storyteller. RIP was probably my biggest disappointment as far as Batman storytelling goes. Final Crisis was so out of sequence and forced you to buy so many alternate titles that I became angered, far before the death of Bruce Wayne. And now, many years after the zombie movement took off everywhere else, we have Blackest Night. I attempted to give Blackest Night a fair chance, but it is nothing but shock tactics each month. Also once again, you need to buy almost every major DC title to keep up with this event. Your crew of solid writers has dwindled down to Bill Willingham and Geoff Johns, who has now become hit and miss. Those two men cannot carry an entire comic book franchise. I don't know what happened with Chuck Dixon, but it is a far bigger loss to DC Comics.

During all of my frustrations with DC, I steadily picked up more and more Marvel titles. Led by Bendis, David, Fraction, Kyle, Yost, Kirkman, Brubaker and Millar the steady stream of great writing has me picking up Marvel titles first each week to read. They seem to put more thought and effort in to each title and event to make sure everything unfolds for the reader nicely. Yes they have had some issues with things releasing on time, but nothing compares to All-Star Batman and Robin for lateness so that argument is lost. When Marvel unveiled Secret Invasion and showed how they had laid the groundwork for it for over 5 years I was simply blown away. All of their major events unfold seamlessly into one another and they take the time to actually develop characters into people who you can love, or hate.

I feel that the only way that I can make a statement as a fan and consumer is to stop purchasing DC Comics material until such time that it will be worth my time and money again.

Best of Luck,
Paul Konasavage

Nite-Wing vs. Nightwing

The other week a friend of mine who owns a comic book shop in town went to a convention. I have yet to make it to one of these epic nerd gatherings, but it's on my list. While there he bought me some original comic art. It is a page from the 90s run of Nightwing, featuring the well done Nite-Wing character. This run by writer Chuck Dixon is probably my favorite comic book series of all time. Dick Grayson and the other major Bat-people do not grace the page that I received, but that matters not. The page features the wannabe crime fighter taking on some common thugs. It made me think back to the good writing and great art that the series had. I can't wait to get it framed and put on display in the house. Others will wonder why I think it's so cool or what is so special about it. I think it is pretty sweet to own a legit piece of comic book art from something I enjoyed so much.

PS
It is even signed by the tracer.

10 Steps to Being a Better Person : Part Three

Watch the Stupid Spending

As mother always told me, money most definitely does not grow on trees. Neither does it grow on ferns, shrubs or cactus. After moving down to part time to become a better parent and partner, I have way less disposable income. Being broke ass sucks, but not having money for the things that matter is worse. Things that once struck me as necessary are now moved in to the "do you really need that at this moment?" column. I work in a restaurant and the wife buys a lot of groceries, so going out to eat frequently needs to go. Also, my son doesn't need a brand new shiny toy each and every time I come home. Considering his new favorite is a bar of Irish Spring, I don't think I need to add to the pile of unused toys. I need to learn how to splurge on myself and the others around me in moderation and not feel like life is a constant popularity contest. I have more than enough ways to have fun without wasting cash, and that is my newest goal.

10 Steps to Being a Better Person : Part 2

No More Fast Food

Today is the day that I finally say goodbye to my good friend the Big Mac. One of my worst habits is whenever I'm hungry I bust a move down to a drive through instead of just cooking something myself (or opting for the much healthier sub). This decision impacts more than myself now that I spend most of my days with my son. I don't need to be turning him into a fast food addict and a virtual fat ass like dear old dad. Also, I have not seen the inside of a gym in over a year, so adding on the pounds while doing nothing to work it off is really a bad decision. At 35 I don't exactly have the metabolism to burn this shit off anymore by just standing there.

So today I say goodbye to that creepy clown and his army of tasty, tasty food. I will truely miss our drunken 4am visits.

10 Steps to Being a Better Person : Part One

Step Number One : Kill the Debt (and stop piling it on)

Yesterday I gave my VISA card to my fiance and said that it wasn't to return. Yes I know cutting it up would be more effective but I want it to still be an option in an emergency. From now on not having money for a slurpee is NOT an emergency though. Last year we renovated the house and paid off all of our debts/loans and put it all into one easy payment on our house. The problem that came from that is that my maxed out credit card had been unleashed from its previously unusable state. Like a fucktard, whenever I was strapped for cash or wanted a big ticket item, there was Mr. VISA smiling warmly at me saying "you have $5000 right here to play with." Now, to no surprise, that card is nearing its max again. A new even greater max thanks to them raising my limit by another two thousand.

My first goal is to pay that fucker off and never look at debts warm embracing smile again. Period.

My Favorite Writers : #1 Chuck Dixon

When I first moved to a big city that had comic book shops I immediately started to buy Batman comics. Chuck Dixon is responsible for a large part of Batman in the 90's and molded my view of the Dark Knight and his cast of allies, most notably Nightwing. Dixon was on board for major stories like Knightfall, Cataclysm and Contagion. Dick Grayson is one of my all time favorite characters because of Dixon's writing of the solo series Nightwing. Other people who tackled Batman did a good job as well, but he seemed to do the best character development and story telling of the time.

Sadly Chuck has had a recent falling out with DC Comics and I will probably never see him write my favorites again. Then again, never say never in comic world.

From Worst to First : Why I Love Tony Stark

A few years ago Civil War was in full swing and Tony Stark was the head of SHIELD. He was one of the main men behind a plan having all superheroes register and become public servants. This would require all heroes to reveal their secret identities to the public as well. Quickly he was becoming the most hated man in the Marvel universe. As far as being likable, Tony Stark is a drunk, a genius and filthy rich. Those are not qualities that the average fan can attach to and claim "now this guy I understand, he's my hero!"...well maybe Bill Gates.

In a strange turn, Marvel Studios chose Iron Man as their fist shot at a major motion picture from their new studio. I went to the theater the day Iron Man was released with modest expectations and found myself loving Tony Stark, who was played by Robert Downy. Downy's life mirrored that of Stark, and I heard later that he openly petitioned to be Iron Man from the start. It apparently takes an arrogant rich drunk to play one, and boy did he hit a home run. The movie, in my opinion, is the best superhero adaptation to the big screen to date. Period. I went to the movies not liking Iron Man at all, and I left really digging him.

Move forward in comics to the Secret Invasion event. Iron Man is tossed as head of SHIELD and made public enemy number one. He is blamed for a nearly successful alien invasion and finds himself on the run from the law. During this time Marvel started a new comic series Invincible Iron Man. I started picking up the back trades of this series and now pick them up right when they come out. It is very well done in both writing and art, and I now find myself being a huge fan of Tony Stark.

Batman : Streets of Gotham #2

Sorry for the lateness of this, I have been working and fighting off a cold recently and still have not finished off last wednesdays comics.

After commenting on how well Judd Winnick was doing on Batman I found it only fair to say that I also am really enjoying Streets of Gotham. Writer Paul Dini made his name from the 90s Batman : The Animated Series which I own every season of. He is responsible for bringing us Harley Quinn and revamping oldies like Mr. Freeze into great characters.

Streets has the story going in a few different directions and poses some great scenarios for readers. I like to see the B-grade characters done well and Dini is using people like Firefly and Mr. Szazs in a good way to keep the big picture moving. The two main plots going on revolve around the new (or original?) Black Mask and Hush. Black Mask's war on Gotham after breaking a bus full of villains free is keeping Batman's hand full, and now Hush is free and pretending to be Bruce Wayne.

Dini does the little things well and after almost two decades of writing for Batman, for television or comic, he is quickly becoming a favorite. Streets #2 was sold out at my comic shop but if you can find it, read it.

Weekly Comics Review

Finally my love has swung back towards DC Comics this week. Batman #688 was probably my favorite read, even though I haven't tied into Wednesday Comics. The only real competition was Dark X-Men and it has yet to really grab me. (Possibly too many Namor shower scenes)

What did I like about Batman this week?

Judd Winick seems to be the only writer involved with Dick Grayson actually doing some character development. I have really enjoyed his interactions with Alfred, Damian and James Gordon. The talks that Dick and Alfred have about his taking on the role as batman are great. They are almost like father/son pep talks and have a family feel to them. In the development of the new Gotham City crime scene, I enjoy the use of two classics in Penguin and Two Face. Grant Morrison has gone in a different direction with Batman and Robin and is creating new villains for a new era. Being the age I am I tend to stay with the classics, and those two are great characters. Having them competing for Gotham's underworld will make a great read. There have been no real big action sequences yet under this Batman run, but the effort going into setting up what looks to be a great story should pay off in the end. Gotham City has its savior back, but more than one person has noticed that he is different. How each person, good or bad, will react to this noticeable change has me looking forward to this series.

Thumbs up for Judd Winick, you are doing a great job.

Restaurant Rant Episode I

I have been waiting for a long time since I started this blog to have something to say about the restaurant industry. Today we finally hit a nerve, the walk in large party.

Here is a little heads up for anyone who has not worked as a server, call ahead. Unless you really want to make a lot of enemies fast do us and yourself a favor and call the restaurant well ahead of time. I'm not talking as you are loading up the bus or getting into your cars, I mean hours and preferably days ahead of time. Of course, if your goal is to make my epic douche bag list then showing up unannounced is a great first step. Nothing makes me happier than turning away a large group on a busy night when they waltz in at peak times. Honestly, do you think that a magical room appears to accommodate your group? Even better is when they get upset that there could be a wait upwards of an hour. I guess I could set off an air horn and scream for everyone that's ahead of you to pack it up but that doesn't strike me as good business. You won't see it this way, you're a douche bag.

You know what is even better?...when you call ahead like a good trooper and then show up anyways when your reservation has been turned down. By golly! It's a two hour wait, just like we told you it would. I can appreciate the determination and willpower you are exerting in being a douche bag, but believe me it's not helping your cause. In your eyes there are five tables all near each other that are all going to finish up just in time to help you out. Here is a heads up number two : It doesn't work that way, and if it does a simple thanks would be much more appreciated over the rudeness and disregard for property that will ensue.

Another strategy that won't pan out for you is arguing with the person when they decline your reservation. It is not our fault that you planned a get together and neglected to actually pick a place until four hours before. Fun fact number three : There are always other people out there that have their shit together better than you do, and they are enjoying a nice meal at the back.

Once you are seated and ready to rock, hopefully because of a successful reservation, there are other courtesys you should adhere to. Just because you don't want to be seated near your children to have a nice quiet dinner doesn't mean that we are a baby sitting service. Watch your own fucking demon spawn, letting them take it out on a server is not the proper course of action. You would not know this as you are enjoying yourself across the room blocking out your child's shrieks.

The last piece of the puzzle is the random hours walk in. It's 10pm and your are on the way home with the team from a tournament and hunger strikes. Being a shrewd manager, I tend to send people home when it slows down and sadly I don't have five server ninjas who swoop down from the rafters when your unsuspecting ass rolls in. The two of us that are left would love to run around like chickens and potentially have a stroke making sure you get every demand. A quick call on your way down ,or heaven forbid pre-game may have saved us a few grey hairs and a substance abuse problem. You don't care though, obviously servers don't have a soul. Let's treat them like a common whore and move on.

So cheers to the large groups of douche bags headed out to eat this summer, I hope having your head up your ass that long doesn't cause too much discomfort.

The Dick Grayson Era Rolls On

So Batman and Robin #2 came out this week, and being a recent Morrison hater I was reluctant to dive in. The premier issue was good and they are trying to introduce some new villains to the Batman rogues gallery. Morrison has stated that he wants to build up new villains and not dig into the deep bag of characters in the Gotham scene. So far I am enjoying the new plot that has Dick using some of his circus history to uncover the villains course of action. The problems he is having with Damien and a lack of confidence in himself are also good building blocks for the future.

I like that they have moved out of the cave and away from Wayne Manor. Ever since Norman Osborn took over SHIELD/HAMMER the new Dark Reign titles have been fantastic. Utopia is the Xmen/Dark Avengers crossover that builds up to the new Dark Xmen title. I am not too fond of the new lineup save for Emma Frost and Mystique (as Prof. X in public) but it will be different to see the original line up on the run from Osborn's new agenda. There were some odd choices for the Dark version that I found interesting and am curious where they are going to go with them. Cloak/Dagger, Mimic, Dark Beast, Dakan, Weapon Omega and Namor don't strike me as real team players, but under Osborn who knows what will happen.

DC Happenings - Detective #854

It is my new goal to write more than a blurb about each comic title when talking about it. I will take the time to be a little more specific about what I like and dislike about them. Since i vaguely touched on Marvel from last week I will touch on a DC title now.

Detective #854 introduces us to the new era under Greg Rucka with Batwoman as the main story and the Question as a backup. I have enjoyed most of Rucka's previous writing and feel that he is one of the few remaining good storytellers left at DC. It kinda saddened me to see that this was going to be a continuation of the Crime Bible stories of last year as they really didn't appeal to me. I was actually very surprised to see the longest running comic title in history handed over to a relatively new character with no real history in the DC universe. The opening story relaunches us into the battle she is fighting against the Religion of Crime and sets up for her battles to come. The more enjoyable part for me was the backup Question story. I have always enjoyed Renee Montoya and her transition to the Question in 52 was a good read.

Rucka is signed on for 12 issues so it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

This Week in Comics - Marvel Comics

Sorry for the lateness again but this week we received 11 titles and it has taken me some time to work through them. As always X-Factor is a pure joy to read and floats to the top of the stack for what I read that week. While on the topic of X titles, Uncanny leads us into a crossover with Dark Avengers called Utopia. Matt Fraction is doing a great job writing our favorite mutants and the road to the Dark X-Men looks to be a great read. On the other hand, Astonishing X-Men has sunk to the bottom of the pile and is almost a pass. Warren Ellis has done very little to follow up Joss Whedon's great two year run. New Avengers wraps up its story arc that lead us to our new Sorcerer Supreme, Brother Voodoo. Bendis has once again scored another great story and made the Hood an A grade villain.

I have yet to dig into the DC portion of my stack, how sad is that. But if Animal Man is any indication then I might have been right to hold off this long.

A League of Their Own

The restaurant that I work at has entered a softball league this year. We are about one third of the way through the season with only one win. When it was looked into, we found out that we were placed in the "competitive division." Competitive softball strikes me as a fantastic example of an oxymoron, somewhere after jumbo shrimp. To us this was suppose to be a fun thing that we could do once a week to get some exercise and hang out with staff outside of work. No such luck. Other teams are rolling in wearing complete matching uniforms, we just have t-shirts with our restaurant logo on them. They also have $500 bats and other professional looking equipment. We are losing by about an average of 17 runs per game, and it's not like we are horrible. These guys are taking it so seriously that i wouldn't be surprised if they compiled their stats for the season. I remember hearing a radio broadcast once where Jim Rome told a story of a disgruntled softball player choking out an eighty year old volunteer umpire for making a "bad call." I think that it is a pretty sad statement that your shining glory in life was beating the snot out of someone in rec softball. I will bet that the summer softball league is what these people do while they wait on their child's hockey season to start up so they can yell "rip his head off!"

Aunts before Wives and Wishing Away the Marvel Universe

I've heard men say "Bros before Hoes" and "Money over Bitches", but thanks to Peter Parker and the brain trust at Marvel Comics I have learned a new one: Elderly old aunts before wives.

Yes I understand that Aunt May Parker is a comic book icon, perhaps even on the level of Alfred Pennyworth, but come on. Back when the House of M event happened I had heard that Joe Quesada had two major beefs with the Marvel universe.

1. There were too many mutants, and that they should be more of a minority. This one I agree with but having someone just wish them away could have been done a bit better. All off a sudden the total amount of mutants is under two hundred and readers are left wondering if their favorite character still has powers.

2. Spider-Man should be that lovable single loser who never makes it with the ladies because he is fighting crime. That is fine and dandy, but Mary Jane has been around for over 20 years. So how do you dump a major character and completely change 20 years of Marvel history. Simple, you make a deal with the devil, something every hero would do....right? Yes this deal was made with good intent, to save his ailing Aunt May once again, but really, the devil. Couldn't Doc Strange or Reed Richards throw you a bone for all of your years of service and conjure up something to prolong your deal old Auntie? Some friends...

So now we have Brand New Day, which i will say is a good read, i just don't like how they got there. Readers get good stories from the new Spidey brain trust, 3 comics a month and Mr. Quesada gets his way. 'Son of the Demon' was an Else Worlds story in DC where Bruce and Talia did have a child, but it played no part in what was going on in normal continuity.

Surprisingly last year, Talia shows up at Bruce Wayne's doorstep with a young boy and tells him it's time he put in some parenting. It took me a long time to warm up to the little brat, mostly because the 'Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul' story wasn't all that great.

Strangely since the ending of the 'Battle for the Cowl' i have really enjoyed the new young Robin. He is brash and speaks his mind, kinda like another former Robin who took a few crowbar shots to the head. The one major difference here is that Damian has a life of training from his mother and the League of Assassins. He is also well aware of who his father is and what legacy that leaves him with. With Dick Grayson now being Batman, Damian fills the void of the condescending and cold Dark Knight that Bruce was while in costume. It will be interesting to see how they develop him so he doesn't turn into another Jason Todd type character, who has floundered since his return.

I am sure that Dick and Damian will have some great sparring sessions, both verbal and physical. If well written, this combo could do wonders...boy wonders.

Return of the Mod

So here is the finished product of Domino. I did a repaint of an Indy comic character named Scarab, and gave her the arms with guns from a different one. I also used some grey stuff to add more hair to make it look right. The hardest part is painting small details like the facial features. The sculpting part will be a challenge and some day I hope to make a character completely from scratch. Batman and Robin was suprisingly good after a subpar run by Morrison in RIP and Final Crisis. Batman and Red Robin are also well done and great foundations for the upcoming year. Bruce Wayne is dead and the people filling the gap are headed in the right direction. Dick is doing a great job as Batman, and i'm not just saying that since he has been one of my favorite characters. Detective is yet to come but if it is the same quality as the titles we have seen so far, then Gotham City is in good hands. Each player has found their niche in this ongoing story. Tim is seaching for Bruce who he is convinced is not dead. Dick has grabbed the mantle of the bat. Damian is now learning the ropes as the new Robin. Batgirl, Batwoman and Manhunter are yet to come in the new era of Gotham.

I look forward to the Dick Grayson years as Batman.

Read This! Here I find myself totally loving the Messiah War, which doesn't even involve any major Marvel titles either. Cable and X-Force house the crossover event taking place in the future. The development that took place over many months of build up in the X-titles has paid off big time to make this a quality story. Many big names are in the story including Apocalypse, Deadpool, Bishop and Wolverine but it is the way that each person is portrayed that counts here. Every member of the story has their own agenda and how it is being played out is pure reading joy, right down to Deadpool's ridiculous comments. I am enjoying this story so much that I have backtracked and picked up the first trade of X-Force and can't wait to read it.

Do yourself a huge favor and read this story, it's another piece in the solid foundation of writing going down at Marvel Comics.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://themultipleman.blogspot.com/2009/06/read-this-wedesday-comics.html' title='Read This! Why shouldn't I unleash my opinion on the unsuspecting interweb as well.

In case you haven't heard, the next big event in DC Comics involves all of the dead heroes coming back as Black Lanterns. Ohhhhh boy, only 5 years after Marvel Zombies, way to be up with the times. The build up to this event has seen the addition of six, yes six, different types of lanterns. No shock here that each is a color of the rainbow with its own "emotion."

Red : Rage
Orange : Avarice (greed for idiots like me)
Yellow : Fear
Green : Willpower
Blue : Hope
Indigo : Compassion
Violet : Love

Now that you are up to date with the rainbow fun they are having down at DC Comics, add to the mix the Black Lanterns, or zombies if you will. Every DC character that has managed to stay dead for more than 5 minutes will now be returning with a black power ring in full on zombie battle.

What do the Care Bears have to do with this you say, good question!

My prediction for this potentially lame ass event is that to finally defeat the black ring wearing zombies (who include a version of Superman!) is that all of the rainbow color lanterns will have to band together to create a white light that will save the universe. I can see it now, Hal Jordan side by side with the leader of each lantern corp. performing a Lantern Stare and laying these poor zombie souls to rest.

I am sure the 2010 DC event will be something along the lines of a Strawberry Shortcake plot.

What's in a name?

Over the past few years in DC Comics they have introduced many superheroes from Asia. What i like about their hero names is that when translated it is pretty much a description of what they do. Superman is a general term, but Accomplished Perfect Physician pretty much tells you where the guy is coming from. Sure Batman lets you know that he is dressed like a bat, but Immortal Man in Darkness pretty much gives you a heads up on what you are dealing with here. Other greats include :

August General in Iron

Ghost Fox Killer

Mother of Champions

Socialist Red Guardsman

Most Excellent Superbat

Big Atomic Lantern Boy

Well spoken Sonic Lightning Flash

...and my favorite Shiny Happy Aquazon.

Not much fear comes from their names, but then again Green Lantern is just as guilty.

I think my asian hero name would be Funny Tall Blogger Man.

Lovable Grouch sues Theatre Production

Long time Sesame Street resident Oscar the Grouch says that he has finally "had enough of this ongoing theft and insult." Run! had me excited as i do enjoy Matt Sturges but the first issue didn't really catch me. The other three i decided to give a chance to as well. I understand that it is only one issue in for each but none of the opening issues really caught me as a must read, something happening alot at DC Comics lately.

I was hoping for the quality that we received when DC did another four title run building up to Infinite Crisis. Villains United, Days of Vengence, OMAC Project and Rann-Thanagar War had some quality writing and also made me a future fan of the Secret Six and Shadowpact. I am on the edge of straight out cancelling all four of these titles unless something really good happens in issue #2 of each. DC is walking a fine line of crappiness lately that borders on just plain bad. They are leaning on Morrison and Johns so much that everything else has fallen to the side. Honestly, if Blackest Night doesn't live up to the hype i can see some changes happening around the DC office.

Friday Favorites - Madrox Edition

Well after a very lazy birthday week, i find myself behind in the blog game. It's no suprise that on a day of multiple posts that i will wind up talking about Madrox, the Multiple Man.

I first started reading X Factor because i really enjoyed Peter David's run on the 90s Aquaman. The first trade of it was recommended by a friend so i picked it up and was astounded. After previous years of laughing at "lame" characters like Strong Guy, i found myself loving a very well done character driven series. All of the characters in X Factor are considered B grade at most, but because of the writing you don't even care if they are "superheroes." The main character, Jamie Madrox, is easily one of my top 5 characters of all time, hence the blog name as well. The nature of how his dupes work is brilliant writing and can lead to so many tales over the years that the potential for him is endless. I will get into the full roll call of X Factor another time, as each character does deserve their due.

Each week David finds a new way to add a twist to Madrox's life, each story on its own is just a fun ride. From having a baby to tracking down every one of his dupes in the world, the life of Jamie Madrox is one to read.

Mod of the week

For those who don't know me very well i will fill in one spot of info. Thanks to a lofty substandard run at DC Comics i have taken a new liking to the Uncanny X-Men. The latest run is fantastic, with great character development and good stories for them to take part in. This weeks Uncanny is the final chapter in a story arc involving the Sisterhood of Evil. Lame name aside it is a cast of some great female villains in the X-universe. Spiral and Deathstrike have always been favorites of mine, and this story uses them very well as a combined team.

Once again Marvel hints at a return of Jean Grey (sigh) and thankfully does not go through with it. It seems that they add a new member to the lineup each comic, with the latest being Northstar and Dazzler. The story arc is great and even has a suprise appearance from Domino. In the end we also get the return of another favorite character of mine, Psylocke. With Dark X-Men on the horizon the X-franchise is doing very well and can only get better.

The World Needs a Frank

First off, this isn't me telling everyone to pick up a gun and start a war against crime. It is more a matter that i am actually shocked that some angry parent or relative hasn't avenged some crime against them or their family with a Punisher style assault. If one has happened then it was such a feeble attempt that it didn't even make the news, or they got swallowed up by the mob on their first run. The concept of the vigilante has been around for a long time and a character like the Punisher isn't so far off that someone with the right training and motivations couldn't do it. To think that a police officer or military person hasn't been a victim of crime is pretty much impossible, so what is stopping the world from seeing its first Frank Castle?

Also on this note, if there was a person on a killing spree against criminals, would the police put in a huge effort to halt it? If the crime rate in a city dropped to record lows out of fear, what would happen in other cities? It would probably spawn a bunch of copycats which would lead to greater problems everywhere.

Anyways, I for one will not be suprised one day if someone does take the law into their own hands on a large scale. I just hope they don't do it dressed up as a bat.

Friday Favorites

Emma Frost

By no means is this list in any sort of order, I am just choosing to write about what ever hero/villain is fresh in my mind. This first time around I am going to talk about Emma Frost, co-leader of the X Men.

X Men as a franchise was by no means a must read of mine over the years, but they do have characters in it that I think are very cool or interesting. There are the obvious choices like Wolverine, but he is actually farther down on my X List. As far as the current lineup I would have to say that Emma Frost ranks up near the top for me. I don't know what it is about her entitled attitude and no bull approach to leadership that i dig so much. She has underlying tension with many of the X Men because of her Hellfire Club days, but when it comes to the crunch time, she is a proven leader. I understand that many fans dislike her because she is the replacement girl for Jean Grey, but i was never a fan of the Scott/Jean relationship. Her role as Scott's love and leader of the team are both unquestioned and rock solid. Only lately with her joining Norman Osborn's Cabal has she shown any signs of her old ways. A few writers have hinted at her returning to the Hellfire Club, but in the end she has remained on the team.

Matt Fraction is the newest writer on Uncanny Xmen and it is by far my favorite writing since I started reading the title a few years back. The Brubaker run was muddled by a year long story arc that revolved around the Shi Ar Empire. Fraction does a great job of writing the characters the way i always imagined them, and Emma is really well done.

Time will tell if Emma ever returns to her evil ways, but for now she is a perfect fit to the new era of the X Men. I can't wait to see how her role in the Cabal and Dark Reign as a whole pans out.

Wednesday Comics

It's the best day of the week again, comic day.

This week i am going to talk about Batman and Robin #1.

The creative team of Morrison/Quitely are now in charge of the greatest duo of all time. The spin on it was for fans to wonder who would fill the roles coming up to the Battle for the Cowl event. With that now over the shoes of Bruce Wayne have been filled by none other, the original Robin Dick Grayson. The role of Robin is a tricky one, it is Bruce Wayne's love child Damian. For those who didn't know, Bruce Wayne actually has a child that isn't just his ward or adpoted child. DC Comics decided to make a story called "Batman : Son of the Demon" a reality. Damian has been trained his whole life by his mother Talia and her league of assasins, which is problem enough.

Time will tell if both Dick and Damian fill their new roles well as the Dynamic Duo. They stand to be a more upbeat version of the tandom, with Dick never being the hardass that Bruce was, but then again Damian is more of a no nonsense type of person.

The first issue is very good and introduces a new villain named Pyg, and there is a sneak peek in the back of the issue of things to come. After Batman RIP and Final Crisis i had lost all hope in Grant Morrison, this may have swung me back in his favor for the time being.

I recommend this title, as the writing and art are both very good Did i mention there is a new flying Batmobile! How cool is that.

This week in history...

This week in 1997, i finally witnessed my first Metallica concert. When i was younger i fancied myself a basketball player and figured that would be my way of life. I went to university pretty much to make the basketball team, and never really took the school part of it seriously. I came close to making the university team but fell short in the end making the junior varsity team. I pretty much coasted out the rest of the year in the school department and took a "year off" to work and think things through. In my head it was time off to get in better shape and take another crack at the basketball program. During this time i got a job at Blockbuster and moved in with some friends still taking classes. One day that summer i played a pick up game of ball with my friends and some local kids that were at the courts that day. At some point during the game one of the opposing players under cut me and i landed awkwardly while still spinning around trying to land. I heard a crunch sound and hit the ground. Being in sports a long time, you hear all kinds of great crunching sounds come from your body and move on. Only this time when my friends helped me to my feet, my lower leg slid into the upper leg and i hit the deck again. They rushed me off to the hospital with my leg completely dislocated and sticking out sideways. Upon arrival to the ER i was put into a "temporary" cast until i could return the next day and see a real doctor. That night i cried myself to sleep with the notion that i'd never play basketball again. I was told the next day that i had torn my ACL, MCL and ruptured my meniscus, the cartilage wasn't doing so great either. The doctor i saw was convinced that i could rehab this injury without surgery, only if i promised never to play sports again. This was a bold statement for a 22 year old at the time, but i assured him that i could do it. I moved back home with my parents and started the long rehab process, and never once did they question what had happened to me. They probably noticed me crying once again on the way home as I had hit what i felt at the time was rock bottom. The next three months i spent in a cast from hip to toes and feeling sorry for myself. I can't thank my parents enough for being supportive and never letting me get too down on myself during these times. I returned back to my roomates months later, and also had my job waiting for me too. It was a rough transition to being a "part time" athlete, which also lead to a follow up surgery 6 months later when the knee finally had enough.

All of these years later i have distanced myself greatly from basketball and rarely watch it. This is a far cry from my obsessive youth where i knew every player and watched every game on TV. With the condition of my knee i barely take party in sports at all, for fear of it failing me again. I believe the doctors exact words were "you can take part in a light game of tennis occasionally". At the time he told me that, you may as well of shot me.

I lead a nice sportsless life now, and a smile comes to my face when my young son dunks his basketball on his mini hoop.

My dirty little secret...

So as many of my friends and co-workers would tell you, i have developed a liking for Men Without Hats. This in its own is odd because the group has been disbanded since the 90's and had their greatest success in the early to mid 80's. What would make a man jump on board a long lost bandwagon you ask?

It started last year when I was surfing You Tube on a daily basis looking for songs from my youth to put together a fun playlist of old music videos I enjoyed. Safety Dance was on that list and when looking for a descent version of it I came across a video of them performing it live. It was a copy of a DVD performance that they released a few years ago of one of their concerts from when they were in their prime. The version of Safety Dance was quite different from the MTV version that most of us came to love, midget and all. Also in this live version, they band had incorperated more standard rock equipment, and not just a synth keyboard. The different version with more of a rock feel to it was quite catchy, and i added it to my favorites. I continued to watch other songs from that concert and found myself liking quite a bit of their performance, shocking on its own because of my heavy metal background. I looked around the internet for the original versions of these songs, and the studio versions didn't hold up to the live ones. The album recordings were very pop and synth driven, not my real cup of tea. I now own that DVD, not suprisingly called Live Hats It was a Christmas gift from the wife when she realized my new obsession with that concert. I still play the DVD on occasion, if only to watch my son dance around to the catchy beats.

Check it out for yourself : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JsKlZaYNnM

Mom would be so proud...

As I sat in the basement playing video games as a youth, mom would yell out "why don't you get outside and get some exercise?" Sadly the Atari 2600 didn't have the options that the Nintendo Wii now has, so I spent my childhood not in the greatest of shape. Today I purchased the EA Active pack for the Wii and can't wait to give it a shot. We already own a Wii Fit and the Personal Trainer package, both of which I have used. With having my son to watch over in the afternoons and some mornings, going to the gym is out of the question. Hopefully during his nap times I can bust out some good exercise time on the Wii and get back into somewhat descent shape.

I know what you're thinking, a video game is not going to be the same as going to the gym. I have watched the evolution of how game companies are using the Wii and some of these exercise "games" look pretty legit. If it gets me to break a sweat I will know it's working. EA Active is getting rave reviews and time will tell if it will work for me.

Not even a sniffle?

Back in the early 90's when DC Comics decided it was time to kill Superman, there was an extreme backlash from the public. It is still the one of the highest selling DC comic of all time as well. It even got to the point where the writers and staff were receiving death threats from crazed fans who could not believe that the longest running hero in print would meet his demise. All these years later Clark is just fine and DC has moved on to bring back most of its major dead heroes : Green Lantern and Green Arrow for starters.

Fast forward to now, Batman is 'dead'.

Was it covered on the news? Nope.

Was it a compelling story that made it worth the read? Not even close.

Did it cause a fan frenzy to buy up all the copies and send death threats to the heads of DC? No sir.

Apparently the second biggest name in DC Comics doesn't get the same love that Superman does, nor does he get the quality of writing that he deserves. Batman RIP is a horrible journey that leaves the casual reader confused and the hardcore fan fuming with rage. You are teased with the prospect of Thomas Wayne still being alive and Bruce falling in love and walking away from being Batman for good. None of this happens of course as Batman is the world's greatest detective and saw it all coming a mile away...again. The ultimate slap in the face was that after the entire story arc of RIP, Batman returns to actually "die" months later in the major event of Final Crisis (both stories by Grant Morrison suprisingly). Batman also dies while using a gun, something he has vowed never to do.

RIP and Final Crisis were horrible displays in story telling and not worthy of being comic events. I have never come so close to cancelling my subscription to the Bat titles and walking away in disgust. Battle for the Cowl was just as bland with the obvious choice of Dick Grayson moving on to become Batman.

Batman has the deepest pool of great characters and villains just waiting to be used in a well written story. It has been a long time since a great story like Hush, and the fans deserve that quality again.

I wish the new Batman creative team all the luck in the world, because no one in the world even knows what just happened to poor Bruce Wayne.

Hey look, another blog!

Just some background on myself.

I am a restaurant manager, family man and jack of most nerd trades.
